
Hutchinson CC Sports Information
The No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College football team started a season 7-0 for the fourth-consecutive season and took sole possession of first place in the Jayhawk Conference on a rainy Saturday night at Gowans Stadium.
The Blue Dragons also earned their third victory over an NJCAA Top-10 opponent this season, defeating No. 10 Coffeyville 31-0.
The Blue Dragons improved to 7-0 and 3-0 in the KJCCC. Coffeyville fell to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the league. Hutchinson will now travel to No. 13 Butler next Saturday in El Dorado.
Hutchinson has now won 11 consecutive games.
Hutchinson posted its second shutout of the season, holding Coffeyville 196 yards under its 355-yard season average. The Blue Dragons held the Red Ravens to 159 total yards (110 passing yards and 49 rushing yards). The Dragons racked up five quarterback sacks, 11 tackles for loss and had three takeaways. The Dragons also forced eight Coffeyville punts.
D.J. Jester had an interception, while Jason Wilson and Kevin Moorer had fumble recoveries. Wilson returned his fumble 15 yards for a Blue Dragon touchdown in the fourth quarter.
The Blue Dragons had 339 total yards, passing for 199 yards and rushing for 140 yards.
Quarterback Christian Johnson completed 12 of 24 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns.
Kordell Gouldsby had a team-high four receptions for 51 yards and a touchdown. L.T. Robinson had three catches for 99 yards and a touchdown. Derrick Salley Jr. had two receptions for 15 yards.
Lekedrin Harvey led the Dragons with 50 rushing yards on nine carries. Johnson rank 19 times for 49 yards. Daeshawn Carter had 34 yards on seven carries.
Kicker Alejandro de la Poza went 1 of 2 on field goals, hitting from 35 yards.
Jester was Hutchinson's leading tackler with five tackles. Five different Blue Dragons had quarterback sacks.
The Blue Dragons didn't score until its fourth possession of the game. They marched 60 yards in seven plays and scored the game's first point when Johnson completed a 30-yard touchdown pass to Gouldsby, who made a one-armed grab in the end zone for a 7-0 lead.
The Dragons scored 17 second-quarter points in a 4-minute, 32-second span late in the second quarter.
First, Robinson caught a 76-yard touchdown pass from Johnson for a 14-0 lead with 5:32 remaining for a 14-0 lead. De la Poza kicked a 35-yard field goal for a 17-0 lead with 2:33 left. The Dragons forced their fourth punt of the first half and the Dragons capitalized with a nine-play, 67-yard scoring march that took just 1:05 and was finished off by a Johnson 4-yard touchdown run for a 24-0 lead with 1:00 remaining in the first half.
The only points scored in the second half was a Blue Dragon defensive touchdown when Wilson picked up a loose football and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown that gave the Dragons a 31-0 lead with 7:19 remaining in the game.
GAME NOTES – Hutchinson's 11-game winning streak is the fourth-longest win streak in team history. … The Blue Dragons are now 19-4 against Top 10 teams in the Drew Dallas era and 26-4 all-time against all nationally ranked opponents. … The Blue Dragons are now 18-3 in their last 21 games against Coffeyville. … The Dragons are 36-56-4 all-time against Coffeyville, including 22-22-2 in games played in Hutchinson. … The Dragons earned just their third shutout of Coffeyville in the 95 games in the series. The last time the Dragons shut out Coffeyville was 2010. … Jason Wilson's fumble return for a touchdown was the fifth defensive score by the Dragons this season.
