HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday voted to put untying liquor by the drink to food sales to a vote of the public in November of 2023.
"I have talked to the state election office and they said other counties have taken this route," said County Counselor Patrick Hoffman. "The statute is self-contradictory, but we believe we can do it, because we have every single precinct having a ballot in a county wide election, we're going to put in on county wide."
Sandhills Brewery had an issue with their liquor license this time around as just weeks before their deadline they had not sold enough food to maintain compliance.
Pippin Williamson, owner of Sandhills was before the commission requesting the vote after a herculean effort by the community got enough food purchased for this renewal.
If passed in 2023, there would no longer be a food requirement to sell liquor in the county.
