UPDATED STORY: A fire caused extensive damage to a home in northwest Hutchinson Monday morning, but no one was hurt.
The Hutchinson Fire Department responded around 10:30 a.m. to the 200 block of Curtis Street after reports of a structure fire. When crews arrived, they found heavy fire at the rear of the home that had spread into the attic and main living area.
Firefighters faced an early challenge because a downed electrical line blocked access to the back of the residence. Crews instead launched an aggressive interior attack through the front entrance while Evergy responded to secure the power line. Once the line was de-energized, firefighters were able to safely complete overhaul operations.
The home was unoccupied when the fire broke out, and no injuries were reported.
Fire officials say damage was contained primarily to the rear of the structure and the attic, although aerial photographs show much of the roof over that section of the home was destroyed.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Hutchinson Fire Department thanked Reno County EMS, Reno County Emergency Communications, Evergy, Kansas Gas, the City of Hutchinson Public Works Department, and the Hutchinson Police Department for assisting at the scene.
