Last week was quite a week for the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team
With one Top 10 victory in a 2-1 week last week, the Blue Dragons earned their first national ranking in three seasons. The team on Tuesday picked up two Jayhawk Conference Players of the Week awards for their efforts.
Now the Blue Dragons can celebrate another moment as freshman outside hitter Giovanna Monteiro was named the NJCAA Division I Volleyball National Player of the Week on Wednesday.
Monteiro, a freshman outside hitter from Uberlandia, Brazil, averaged 4.08 kills and hit .333 to lead the surging Blue Dragons.
Over 13 sets, Monteiro had 53 total kills and had three double-doubles to lead the Blue Dragons. In a five-set loss to No. 7 Colby, Monteiro had 16 kills and 10 digs. In a five-set road win at No. 10 Dodge City, Monteiro had 23 kills and a career-high 24 digs.
She completed the week with 14 kills and 11 digs in a sweep over Butler. Monteiro is current second in the KJCCC with 4.04 kills per set.
She is the first Blue Dragon to earn national weekly honors since Clara Oliveira earned the award last season. Before Oliveira, setter Chloe Price was the last winner on 2021. The last Blue Dragon hitter to win national player of the week honors was Page Hiebert on September 13, 2017.
