SOUTH HUTCHINSON Kan.— New South Hutchinson City Manager Joseph Turner announced Monday that former city clerk Denise McCue is returning to South Hutchinson and will resume that role once again. McCue held that position for 18 years before resigning last year. She replaces Kara Neilsen who resigned this spring.
“I didn’t think I would ever come back, but Joe is very persistent and persuasive,” McCue said. “He assured me that things would be different under his leadership. I am elated and can’t wait to start.”
Turner consulted with the governing body and devised a strategy to get McCue to come back. Under a new agreement the city clerk will no longer be an annual appointed position. Instead, McCue will now work under the terms of a three-year contract with severance package provisions and can only be terminated by the city administrator. Additionally, McCue will retain her level of seniority and commensurate benefits package.
“Denise loves this community and is passionate about public service. And Joe has not even started yet and is already delivering results,” said Mayor Matt Nisly. “I am very excited about the direction we are heading.”
The South Hutchinson City Council unanimously approved her contract during a special meeting held last Friday.
McCue was hired on September 30, 2002 and resigned October 2, 2020. Her anticipated start date is June 11th. Turner becomes the new city administrator June 7th.
