Flood warnings issued

 The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued flood warnings for Cow Creek near Lyons and Hutchinson, with minor to moderate flooding expected between late Friday night and early next week.

A more serious flood warning is in place for Cow Creek near Hutchinson from Saturday morning through early Tuesday. Forecasters predict moderate flooding, approaching the record flood stage.

  1. Flood Stage: 9.5 feet
  2. Current Level (8:15 a.m. Friday): 6.2 feet
  3. Expected Crest: 10.5 feet by Sunday morning
  4. Duration: Expected to fall below flood stage by Monday afternoon
  5. Impacts: Numerous rural roads northwest of Hutchinson are expected to flood. Affected roads include:
  6. 43rd Street from Pennington to Hendricks
  7. 69th Street from Wilson to Pennington
  8. 50th Street from Wilson to Pennington
  9. Pennington Road from Nickerson Blvd to 50th Avenue
  10. Wilson Road from 82nd to 95th Avenue
  11. Intersection of 56th Avenue and Pennington Road

A flood warning is in effect from late tonight through early Saturday afternoon for Cow Creek near Lyons, affecting Rice and Reno counties.

  1. Flood Stage: 18.0 feet
  2. Current Level (8:30 a.m. Friday): 15.6 feet
  3. Expected Crest: 18.0 feet just after midnight tonight
  4. Impacts: Low-lying and agricultural areas, especially on the creek’s right bank, may flood. Portions of 20th Road and 22nd Road approximately six miles southeast of Lyons could be impacted.

Safety Precautions:

Officials urge residents to stay alert, avoid driving into flooded areas, and heed barricades and road closures. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains the official guidance, as just two feet of water can sweep most vehicles away.
