Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northwest corner of East 1st Avenue and North Pershing.
Hutchinson had many lumber yards throughout history. One of those was E. W. Hamsom Lumber in 1935 at 732 E. 1st Ave.
In 1937, Virgil Teeter and Jack Davis teamed up to purchase the yard.
By 1941, Jack and Stewart Davis had assumed control and the name was changed to Davis Lumber. The first photo shows that yard in the winter of 1949.

By 1953, Jack was the sole owner and things went along smoothly until a fire on May 7, 1959. The second photo shows that fire in action.

The Davis family rebuilt after that on the same location.
In 1966, Jack's son Jon joined the business and they ran it together until Jack retired in 1972. At that time, brother Jim joined the business.
In 1976, the company purchased the old "Roller City/Skatemor" roller-skating rink at 1035 E. 30th, remodeled that and continued there until Star Lumber of Wichita purchased the business. The third photo shows the current property at 732 E. 1st, now a round-top structure and owned by USD 308, that was their old food services warehouse.
