Betty Jo Smith, 85, passed away February 1, 2022 at Via Christi St. Teresa Hospital in Wichita, KS. She was born on November 22, 1936 at Anthony, to Harold & Eloise “Billie” (Bowman) Roark. After the death of her Mother when she was 6 years old, she was raised by her Aunt and Uncle, Sarah & Russell Lake.


Betty lived the majority of her life in Lake City and attended Sun City High School. She was a retired homemaker, nurse’s aide and USD 254 school bus driver. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Medicine Lodge, and the United Methodist Women at Lake City.

Betty was an accomplished seamstress, teaching countless grandchildren and 4-H kids to sew. She also enjoyed crafting, cooking, working in her flower beds and gardening. She was a big fan of any and all sports and an animal lover. Her biggest joy in her life was her family, especially her grand and great-grandchildren.


On March 4, 1955 she married James E. ‘Jim’ Smith at Coldwater. He preceded her in death on March 26, 2012. She is survived by sons: Steve (Bonnie) Turon Ks; Perry (Sharon) Wamego; a daughter Cheryl Wiske, Medicine Lodge; Grandchildren: Jolinda (Karol) Mierny, Jaceilia (Kyle) Graves, Jennifer (Bill) Neywick, Emma (Kevin) Werlein, Hiel (Jamie) Smith; Great-grandchildren are Keaton, Kylee, Jackson, Karson, Emilia, Ava, Lane, Wyatt, Kase, Brooklyn, & Jaylee.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Aunt Sarah and Uncle Russell, infant daughter Lori Denise, son-in-law, Bill Wiske , grandson William Wiske and a nephew, Michael Smith.


Visitation will be Thursday at Larrison Funeral Home, 120 E. Lincoln, Medicine Lodge, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Funeral Service will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, February 4, 2022 at Larrison Funeral Home, Medicine Lodge with Pastor Dennis Fangmeyer presiding. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge.
