First Presbyterian, Emanuel Lutheran, and Grace Episcopal Churches, all of Hutchinson, will jointly host a “Blue Christmas” worship service on December 11, at 7 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church, 201 E. Sherman Street. The event is open to the entire Hutchinson community.
Traditionally occurring on or around the winter solstice, the longest night of the year, a Blue Christmas service is meant to provide hope and healing for those experiencing grief, loss, or other difficult life situations during the holiday season.
“Although we often think of the holidays as a time of joy, celebration, and fellowship with family and friends, for some, the Christmas season means anxiety, stress, and isolation,” said the Reverend Christy Kass, pastor of First Presbyterian. “By working together, our congregations hope to provide a meaningful service for the community and an experience of solace and comfort for those having a hard time.”
This is the second year for the event, with the location rotating among the three congregations. Emanuel Lutheran hosted the inaugural joint Blue Christmas service last year.
