Christine (Chrissy) Ann Ward, 70, went home to be with her Lord on October 7, 2021.
Christine is the oldest of five children born to Clifford and Iva Mae Hummel on August 27, 1951 in St. Louis, Missouri. When she was an infant, the family moved back to their hometown of Newton, Iowa, and she spent her formative years there. As a teenager, her first job was working for her father at “Cliff’s” restaurant in Newton. Christine began her most important job, mother to Matthew, on April 1st, 1972.
She worked in the mid 1980’s to earn her GED which led to her furthering her education at Tarrant County College in Ft. Worth, Tx. As a member of the National Honor Society, she completed her associates degree with highest honors in 1991. That year she was accepted to the University of Colorado, she then moved to Colorado Springs and began work as an undergraduate. It was there she was inducted into the Psi Chi honors society in 1995. One of her greatest achievements in life was graduating from UCCS, with honors, with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 1998.
While living in Colorado, Christine met Denis Ward. The two of them were married January 1, 1994. She and Denis built a life together and blended their families. They were married for 27 years and in that time they lived in: Colorado, Kansas, Kentucky, and Louisiana. In 2017 they moved back to Kansas from Louisiana for their retirement. They have spent the past few years together in Newton, Ks.
Christine lived a full life. She was always singing in the kitchen, looking for ways to show her love to family through her cooking and baking. Caring for others was her life calling. She was always helping her friends and family and even strangers by showing them Christ’s love.
Christine is survived by her husband Denis Ward and her son Matthew George. To the marriage Denis brought daughters: Jayde, Jasmine, and Jenna. Her siblings are: Cathi (Hummel) Dunnam, Kimberly Hummel, Kevin Hummel, and Kari (Hummel) Burks. She is also survived by her nieces and nephew, her great nieces, her grandchildren and great grandchild; many other family and friends.
A memorial service to celebrate Christine's life will be Wednesday, Oct. 13th at 11:00 a.m. at Shalom Mennonite Church, 800 East 1st Street, Newton, KS
