NEWTON — The Newton City Commission on Tuesday adopted a series of building code updates aimed at aligning the city’s standards with those used in Wichita, where many local contractors also work.
The action brings Newton up to the 2024 editions of the International Building Code, International Mechanical Code, and International Existing Building Code, along with the 2018 edition of the International Residential Code. Commissioners had previously approved adoption of the International Fire Code earlier this year. The changes followed multiple work sessions with contractors and building owners to gather feedback.
In addition to the code updates, commissioners received an update on Newton Next, the city’s new comprehensive planning process. Newton Next replaces the 2010 ReNewton plan and will guide community development priorities in the years ahead.
A new website, NewtonNextPlan.com, will provide updates, a survey, and information on how residents can participate through the Community Voices Team. Two public input events are scheduled this fall:
• Visioning Workshop with the Community Voices Team – 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 7 at Fire/EMS Station 3, 2520 S. Kansas.
• Public Open House – 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 8 at Station 3.
