HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Rail traffic has resumed through Hutchinson following a Union Pacific train derailment early Monday morning, the railroad confirmed on Wednesday.
Jill Micek, communications manager for Union Pacific Railroad, said the cause of the derailment remains under investigation by the Federal Railroad Administration. No timeline has been set for when the investigation report will be released.
The incident occurred around 1 a.m. Monday near 17th Avenue and North Halstead Street, where approximately two dozen rail cars left the tracks. No injuries or hazardous material spills were reported.
Cleanup and repairs continued through Tuesday, and the railroad crossing at 17th Avenue has since reopened. However, one northbound lane of K-61 between 17th and 30th avenues remain closed.
Drivers are urged to slow down, watch for workers, and be mindful of any detours in the area.
