HARVEY/RENO COUNTY, Kan. — Emergency responders have stopped the forward progress of a grass fire that broke out Thursday afternoon near the Harvey/Reno County line.
The fire, which began around 3:30 p.m., burned in a rural area generally bounded by Northwest 12th and 24th streets and North Woodberry and Wheat State roads. Crews were able to contain the blaze, preventing further spread, and have now transitioned to mop-up operations.
Officials say responders will remain on scene for several hours to monitor hot spots and ensure the fire does not rekindle. Smoke may remain visible from the burned area for the next couple of days.
One firefighter sustained minor injuries while battling the fire. No structures were damaged.
Authorities note that wildfires in this region can be particularly difficult to control due to the landscape, which provides ample fuel. Strong winds on Thursday also complicated suppression efforts.
Multiple agencies responded to the incident, including fire and EMS units from Burrton, Halstead, Hesston, Moundridge, Mount Hope, Newton and Sedgwick. Law enforcement support was provided by police departments from Burrton, Halstead and Newton, along with the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office. Additional coordination came from Harvey County Emergency Management, Reno County Emergency Management and Harvey County Communications.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Officials are reminding residents that grassland fire danger remains elevated through the weekend and are urging caution with any outdoor activities that could spark a fire.
