⚾ Salthawks split home triangular

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson split its home triangular Friday at Hobart-Detter Field, defeating the Haven Wildcats 4-1 before falling to Andale-Garden Plain 14-10.

Andale-Garden Plain went 2-0 on the day, opening with a 6-0 win over Haven. The Salthawks moved to 3-19, while Andale-Garden Plain improved to 11-9 and Haven dropped to 12-11.

Hutchinson will travel to Newton on Tuesday to face the Railers with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.

Hutchinson 4, Haven 1

Hutchinson used steady pitching and timely offense to take the opener, scoring single runs in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings.

Brodie McCuan reached on an error to start the first and later scored on Merrick Brotzman’s groundout for a 1-0 lead. McCuan finished with a hit and two runs scored.

JuJu Lyons added an RBI groundout in the third to make it 2-0, and later tripled and scored in the fifth. Payne Young drove in a run with a double in the sixth to extend the lead.

Kam Wilson earned the win in relief, allowing one run on five hits over 5 1/3 innings while striking out five. Lyons started and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first inning.

Haven’s lone run came in the seventh on an RBI groundout following a leadoff double.

Andale-Garden Plain 14, Hutchinson 10

The nightcap turned into a high-scoring affair, with Andale-Garden Plain jumping out to a six-run first inning, aided by multiple Hutchinson errors.

The Salthawks answered in the second, scoring four runs to cut the deficit to 7-5. Lyons delivered a bases-clearing double, and Brotzman followed with an RBI double.

Hutchinson trimmed the deficit to 8-6 in the fourth on Brotzman’s RBI single, but Andale-Garden Plain responded with a run in the fifth and broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning to push the lead to 14-6.

Hutchinson rallied again with two runs in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk and a hit batter, then added two more in the seventh on a two-run single by Brotzman.

Lyons led the Salthawks, going 3 for 4 with three runs and three RBIs. Brotzman added three hits and four RBIs, while McCuan scored four runs.
