What was once a former detox facility in Hutchinson is being reimagined into a new community resource called The Center, designed to help individuals experiencing homelessness gain stability through life skills, trauma support, and empowerment programs.
The project is being led by New Beginnings, which already owns the building at Second and Walnut. By utilizing the existing facility, the organization avoids the expense of purchasing or constructing a new building. When complete, the 16-room facility will offer more than 30 beds and a variety of support services focused on long-term transformation rather than short-term shelter.
“This is more than a shelter,” New Beginnings leaders said in a statement. “This is where transformation begins.”
The Center’s mission is to go beyond providing a bed for the night, addressing root causes of homelessness such as trauma, grief, poverty, or systemic barriers. Experts in trauma recovery, life skills, and stability-building will work alongside residents to help them break cycles and prepare for a sustainable future.

Community support will be key in turning this vision into reality. New Beginnings is currently seeking donations to furnish the facility’s rooms. They are doing a furniture drive on their website to furnish the rooms in the new facility.
The Center is expected to open its doors in 2026, and New Beginnings hopes it will become a place where crisis no longer defines the future—where resources, compassion, and structure provide the tools for healing, growth, and opportunity.
