HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Polar Plunge in Hutchinson this year will likely not be nearly as cold.

"We did have some changes with the Hutchinson event," said Mitch Guthrie with Special Olympics Kansas. "We're just giving people a little bit more of a chance to sign up. The event that was scheduled for this Saturday, we went ahead and rescheduled for May 20th."

The Law Enforcement Torch Run event that it will now coincide with started here in Kansas.

"We're celebrating our 40th anniversary of the Law Enforcement Torch Run," Guthrie said. "That's a fundraiser for Special Olympics by law enforcement officers around the state of Kansas. That whole movement started here in Kansas 40 years ago. Since its inception, it's made close to $80 million for Special Olympic athletes worldwide."

Those events will now be a part of Third Thursday in May. The traditional statewide track meet for Special Olympics also will be changing.

"What we're looking at doing there is something similar to what we've done, just on a smaller scale," Guthrie said. "Our summer games is typically that first weekend of June and we'll have it just at a regional level in some fashion this year."

Details on all the events will be available at ksso.org.
