Chas Obit (written by himself)
It all began in the bucolic little Mormon town of Basin, Wyoming wherein Charles Vaughn DeGeer was born to Mary Golden DeGeer and Vaughn Eugene (Gene) DeGeer Jr June 12, 1940.
Gene was commanding a Civilian Conservation Corps camp at the time. After Gene was called to active Army duty in January 1942, the family lived in Newton, most of the war. In early 1946 they moved to the family ranch south of Deerhead, to help Gene’s parents operate the ranch. Charlie and sisters Katharine and Mary Jean attended PS 63 at Deerhead. Charlie went to High School in Medicine Lodge and was a proud member of the Glorious Class of 57. He went to Kansas State University of Agriculture and Applied Science.
He had the good fortune to marry Louise Miller in Hutchinson August 7, 1965. They moved to Abilene, Texas in April 1966 where they were joined by daughter, Mary Elizabeth (Beth) in July. In 1967 they moved to Clay Center, Nebraska, where Charlie worked for the US Meat Animal Research Center. In August 1970 son, Vaughn David, was born. The family came to Medicine Lodge in May 1979 to operate the Ranch with Gene and Mary.
Charlie enjoyed ranching, hunting, fishing, German shorthair pointers, Formula 1 racing, and family activities. He served his communities for 40 years as a volunteer fireman and 30 years as the Midnight Voice of the Barber County Sheriff.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and his wife.
He is survived by his sisters, Katharine DeGeer of Pratt, and Mary Jean Benefiel (Bill) of Vancouver, Washington; his brother, Jim DeGeer (Teri Sue) of Erie; his children, Beth DeGeer of Bartlesville, Oklahoma and Vaughn DeGeer of Medicine Lodge.
Charlie would like to be remembered as a quiet guy; who kept to himself a lot.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 21, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Larrison Funeral Home, 120 E. Lincoln, Medicine Lodge, with The Reverend Karen Lemon officiating.
