LYONS, Kan. — The Lyons Fire Department responded Saturday to another railroad trestle bridge fire west of 20th Road along U.S. 56.
Fire officials said the bridge was engulfed in flames when crews arrived. Firefighters used water and foam to extinguish the blaze.
The fire was contained within an already burned area, and a nearby field was plowed to help prevent the flames from spreading. Officials said the railroad ties could continue smoldering for several days.
The department has responded to three additional fires involving smoldering railroad ties since a series of fires Thursday afternoon and evening.
Thursday’s incidents began when firefighters were dispatched near the Celebration Centre for a semi hauling hedge posts that had caught fire on the trailer.
Embers from the burning load reportedly ignited several spot fires along U.S. 56 between the Windom area and Lyons. Multiple fire departments were called to assist because hot, dry conditions increased the risk of the fires spreading.
Fire officials urged people traveling through the affected area to remain cautious as crews continue monitoring hot spots.
