UPDATE: 9 a.m. Monday Morning
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a Hutchinson man dead Sunday evening.
According to the KBI, the incident began around 6 p.m. on June 7 when officers with the Hutchinson Police Department responded to a residence in the 3300 block of Dartmouth Road to follow up on a theft investigation.
Police were attempting to question 30-year-old Jonathan Lawrence when he stepped outside the residence to speak with officers. During the encounter, officers observed that Lawrence was carrying a handgun.
The KBI said officers attempted to detain and disarm Lawrence, leading to a physical struggle. During the altercation, Lawrence allegedly battered both officers before fleeing into the garage of the residence.
Investigators said one officer deployed a Taser, causing Lawrence to fall and drop the handgun. As a second officer attempted to take him into custody, Lawrence reportedly reached for and regained control of the firearm.
At that point, the officer who deployed the Taser drew a service weapon and fired multiple rounds, striking Lawrence.
Officers immediately began providing life-saving measures. Deputies from the Reno County Sheriff's Office assisted with medical aid until EMS personnel arrived. Lawrence was transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
The KBI reported that no law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
The Hutchinson Police Department requested assistance from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation at approximately 7:23 p.m. Sunday. KBI agents and the agency's Crime Scene Response Team responded to investigate.
The KBI emphasized that the information released is preliminary and based on evidence gathered during the early stages of the investigation, including witness statements and physical evidence. A final determination of the events surrounding the shooting is expected to take several weeks.
The investigation remains ongoing.
