🏐 Dragons earn KJCCC sweep of T-Birds

Hutchinson CC Sports Information

The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team hit a conference-high .357 attack percentage to earn a 3-0 sweep of the Cloud County Thunderbirds on Saturday night at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Three players reached double figures in kills as Hutchinson defeated Cloud County 25-16, 25-21, 25-16.

The Blue Dragons improved to 13-15 overall and 5-8 in the KJCCC. The Dragons travel to play Seward County next Saturday in Liberal. The Thunderbirds fell to 6-24 overall and 0-12 in the league.

The Dragons posted their sixth match of the season with a hitting percentage of .300 or better. The Dragons had 52 kills on 112 attacks and had 12 attack errors.

Sophomore outside hitter Alondra Villanueva posted her team-high 13th double-double of the season with 13 kills and 15 digs. Villanueva hit .286 on 28 attacks. She added one ace serve and one block assist.

Sophomore outside hitter Atlyn Proctor hit .333 on 27 swings and finished with 12 kills. Sophomore Jaylynn McNeill had 10 kills on .429 hitting. Freshman Mattie Galliher had eight kills and hit .429. Sophomore Kierny Follmer had five kills on .417 hitting.

The Blue Dragons out-hit Cloud County .357-.160 with 22 more kills than the T-Birds. Cloud County owned a 6-1 blocking advantage. The Dragons led in digs 53-41. Each team had four ace serves.

Sophomore setter Angela Reupena finished with 44 assists, the second-highest total for her this season. She also had three kills and eight digs.

Freshman libero Clara Oliveira finished with a team-high 16 digs.

Zoey Sudbeck had nine kills and Carlie Carlgren had seven kills to lead Cloud County.

The Blue Dragons earned their 20th-consecutive victory over Cloud County.

SET 1: The Blue Dragons started off strong with .393 hitting on 15 kills and 28 attacks in the opening set. Proctor and three kills and Galliher added two kills in an initial 9-2 opening surge. Cloud County then scored three in a row to pull within 9-5. Follmer, Reupena and Villanueva then had kills in consecutive rallies to led 12-5. Galliher's third kill of the set boosted the lead to 17-9. Leading 22-16, a Galliher kill and McNeill kill got the Dragons to set point and a ball-handling violation by the T-Birds gave the Dragons set point and a 25-16 win. Cloud County was held to .065 hitting in the set.

SET 2: After a 4-0 Cloud County put the Dragons behind 12-9 in the second set, it took every bit of their .459 hitting and 20 kills in the set to rally for the Dragons. Hutchinson tied the set at 15-all on a McNeill kill from a Cloud overpass. The set had 12 ties and five lead changes, the final lead change came when Proctor put away a kill and Villanueva followed for an 18-16 lead. Leading 23-21, back-to-back kills from Proctor gave the Dragons a 25-21 lead and a 2-0 match lead.

SET 3: Back-to-back McNeill kills gave the Dragons an early 7-3 lead. Another McNeill kill upped the lead to 8-4. A fourth McNeill kill of the set boosted the lead to 14-8. Cloud County got within 15-12. The Dragons answered the challenge with a 7-1 run. After a pair of dumps for kills by Reupena, an ace serve from Pricilla Raschen and a Daniela Pedroza kill, the Dragons led 22-13.
