With two wins already in the books, the Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team advances to the NJCAA Division I Women’s National Tournament quarterfinal round for the eighth time in program history on Saturday.
The 13th-seeded and 13th-ranked Blue Dragons (29-6) will meet the No. 8-ranked and fifth-seeded Clarendon Bulldogs at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the third quarterfinal game of the day at Townsley Law Arena in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
The game will be broadcast live on KHMY-FM (93.1), with pregame coverage beginning at 2:15 p.m. and Sean Boston on the call. The game will be televised on ESPN+ with Zach McKinstry handling play-by-play and Brian Burton providing color commentary.
The Blue Dragons are 7-0 all-time in national tournament quarterfinal games and are making their first appearance in the round of eight since 2024, when they won the NJCAA Division I national championship.
Hutchinson advanced to the quarterfinals with wins over No. 20-seeded Williston State, 54-50, in the first round and No. 4-seeded Northwest Florida State, 64-53, in the second round.
Defense has led the way for the Blue Dragons in Lake Charles. Hutchinson has held two of the nation’s top offenses a combined 41.2 and 18.3 points below their season scoring averages. Through two tournament games, the Blue Dragons are allowing 51.5 points per game and 35.3 percent shooting.
Freshman guard KaMyra Barber has paced Hutchinson in the national tournament, averaging a double-double of 17.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game.
The Blue Dragons have also shown balance offensively in Lake Charles. Katie Duncan is averaging 11.0 points per game, Whitney Brown is averaging 10.0 points and Noelle Anthon is averaging 9.0 points per contest.
Clarendon, the Region 5 champion, played its first national tournament game on Friday and defeated Three Rivers, 61-57, in a second-round matchup.
The Bulldogs present the third straight challenge of the tournament against a high-scoring team with a strong defense for Hutchinson.
Clarendon averages 74.8 points per game while shooting 45.3 percent from the field and 34.0 percent from 3-point range. The Bulldogs rank third in the NJCAA in scoring defense at 49.1 points allowed per game, making this the second straight game Hutchinson will face a Top-5 scoring defense.
Armanda Sindalawa leads Clarendon in scoring at 16.7 points per game. Zainab Olalekan averages a double-double of 11.4 points and 13.9 rebounds per game, with her rebounding average ranking second in the NJCAA.
