
HUTCHINSON, KAN. — Hutch High basketball teams split with the Maize Eagles on Tuesday at the Salthawk Activity Center in the season opener for both teams.
The Hutch girls outscored Maize in the second quarter 21-3 to take a commanding lead into halftime 31-13. The Salthawks closed out the fourth quarter strong to come away with a 50-34 victory for the first win of the 2024-25 season.
Hutch High senior leaders Grace Posh and Kaia Smith led in scoring with Posh putting up 18 points and Smith scoring 15.
Maize was lead by freshman guard Malaysia Ingram with 11 points while senior Adley Pierce added 9 points.
Just the opposite story for the Hutch High boy's game as Maize High rode a six-point lead at the half to win their first game of the year 59-46 over the Salthawks.
Maize High senior Alan Hanna let Maize with 26 points on the night. Hutch High was let in scoring with senior Terrell King scoring 22 points and Taishaun Govain's 12 point night.
The Salthawks travel to Buhler for non-league games versus the Crusaders on Friday night. Girls tip off at 6 p.m. followed by the Hutch High boy's contest at 7:30 p.m.
