
GREENSBURG, Kan. — Pretty Prairie and Hutchinson-Central Christian each had strong days Friday at a Class 1A regional track and field meet at Kiowa County High School.
The Pretty Prairie girls finished second in the team standings with 75 points, just three points behind regional champion Ashland. Hutchinson-Central Christian was fourth with 49 points, while Pratt-Skyline was 17th with six points and Fairfield tied for 18th with four.
On the boys side, Pretty Prairie finished 13th with 15 points, Fairfield was 14th with 13, Hutchinson-Central Christian was 16th with 10, Pratt-Skyline tied for 18th with six, and Burrton was 25th with one point.
The top three finishers in each event automatically qualified for the Class 1A state meet. Additional at-large qualifiers will be determined by the next six best performances statewide from regional competition.
Pretty Prairie’s girls were led by Lauren Detter, who won regional titles in the 800 and 1,600. Detter won the 800 in 2 minutes, 23.57 seconds and took the 1,600 in 5:25.89. Amity White also qualified automatically in two distance events, placing third in the 1,600 in 5:39.94 and second in the 3,200 in 12:40.92.
The Pretty Prairie girls also won the 4x800 relay in 11:25.44 and placed third in both the 4x100 relay in 53.20 and the 4x400 relay in 4:22.56. Kayleigh Vogl added a runner-up finish in the triple jump at 35 feet, 1.75 inches.
Hutchinson-Central Christian’s Harper Newcome qualified in three individual events. Newcome won the 400 in 1:02.31, placed second in the long jump at 17-4.50 and finished third in the 100 in 12.89. She also reached the 200 final and placed seventh in 27.70.
Central Christian also got automatic qualifying performances from Townsly Huff, who placed third in the high jump at 4-10 and third in the javelin at 113-11, Addi Loudenback, who won the 300 hurdles in 47.87, and Cal Barnett, who finished second in the boys triple jump at 44-1.
Barnett added a sixth-place finish in the 200 in 23.50 and was eighth in the long jump at 19-3.50. Konnor Sullivan finished eighth in the 110 hurdles and 10th in the 300 hurdles.
Fairfield was led by Brodie Snodgrass, who placed third in the boys long jump at 21-6.75 to qualify automatically for state. William McIver added a fourth-place finish in the 800 in 2:08.17, while the Fairfield boys 4x800 relay placed fifth in 9:11.27. Kora Zongker led the girls, placing fifth in the triple jump and 10th in the long jump.
Pratt-Skyline’s top performance came from Ruby Wooster, who placed third in the girls 3,200 in 12:58.63 to earn an automatic state berth. Ely Robinson placed fourth in the boys 3,200 in 10:37.67. Avery Shafer added a sixth-place finish in the boys triple jump.
Burrton’s Isaac Jones placed seventh in the boys 3,200 in 10:58.84, while Ryker Barnes was ninth in the 800 in 2:13.47. Logan Lane placed 14th in the 400 in 58.59 and 18th in the boys 100 preliminaries.
Cunningham won the boys team championship with 90 points. Kiowa County was second with 68, and Kiowa South Barber was third with 61.
