Salthawk Baseball swept by Maize, 16-6, 17-3

HUTCHINSON, Kan.—The Salthawk Baseball team had the lead in both game Friday night at Hobart-Detter field but then saw Maize battle back to run rule Hutch in both games.  Maize rallied to win the first game 16-6 in 5 innings after trailing 6-3 to the Salthawks.  In game 2, Hutchinson had a 3-2 lead that didn't last long to see Maize come back to win 17-3 in five innings.  The last 3 innings were played in tough conditions as the weather turned and 50 mph winds made conditions really tough.

Game 1 recap-

Both pitching staffs had their hands full on Friday in a high-scoring affair where Maize bested Hutchinson Salthawks Varsity, 16-6. Hutchinson  struggled to contain the high-powered offense of Maize, giving up 16 runs. Maize got things moving in the first inning, when Jaden Gustafson tripled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring Avery Johnson. 

Hutchinson Salthawks Varsity notched six runs in the second inning. Jax Heneha, Caiden Beavers, Kinser Newquist , and Lakin Franz each drove in runs during the inning. 

In the third Hutchinson pitchers struggled to find the plate walking three straight batters. Avery Johnson then doubled on a 1-2 count, scoring three runs, Landon Helm  and Gustafson then both singled. By the time the inning was completed, Maize had scored 8 runs.

Doty earned the win for Maize going two innings, allowing zero runs on two hits, striking out one and walking one. Rylee Wray threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Carter Morgan took the loss for the Salthawks. Morgan surrendered nine runs on five hits over two and two-thirds innings, striking out one. Clayton Crockett started the game for Maize and lasted two innings, allowing four hits and six runs. Newquist , Franz , Beavers, Mikah Giles, Morgan, and Heneha all had one hit to lead Hutch on offense. Maize collected 14 hits in game 1.

Game 2 recap-

It was much of the same in the 2nd game of the double-header, as Hutch lost 17-3 to Maize.

The Salthawks took an early lead in the first inning. Hutchinson got a quick start and scored one run when Mikah Giles singled.  Maize took the lead for good with four runs in the second inning. 

In the second Landon Helm singled on a 3-1 count, scoring one run, Sam Schmidt then drew a walk, scoring one run, and Aiden Doty singled on a 1-1 count, knocking in 2. In all Maize scored eight runs in the third inning. Maize big bats were led by Helm, Schmidt, Drew Wardell, Clayton Crockett, Avery Johnson, and Helm, all sending runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.

Sophomore Easton Roth took the win for Maize. Roth went four and a third innings, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out seven. Justin Stephens threw two-thirds of an inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Nolyn Cunningham took the loss for Hutchinson Salthawks Varsity. Cunningham went two innings, allowing six runs on six hits and striking out one.

Kinser Newquist , Lakin Franz , Caiden Beavers, Giles, Carter Morgan, and Jack Davis each collected one hit to lead the Salthawks offensively. 

Maize totaled 15 hits in the contest with Wardell, Helm, Cole Schieffer, Doty, Jaden Gustafson, and Schmidt all collecting multiple hits for the Eagles. 

Wardell led Maize with three hits in four at bats.

Maize travels to Newton next Tuesday while Hutchinson has Tuesday off before hosting Newton next Friday for the last home stand of the season for the Salthawks.  Those games will be broadcast on Hutchpost.com
