HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Schools across Kansas held their first day of practice Monday for the upcoming high school football season.
For the Hutchinson Salthawks, it marked the first practice under new head football coach Luke Berblinger.
Due to expected heat throughout the week, the Salthawks will hold their first week of practices in the late evenings at Don Michael Field. Under the lights Monday night, preparation began for the season opener Sept. 4.
Just under 100 players attended the high school practice, which featured high energy and strong camaraderie.
“Guys were really excited to get out here,” Hutchinson High School head football coach Luke Berblinger said. “Overall, the energy was good, guys were excited, and they competed hard, which is the number one thing that we are looking for.”
Berblinger, a first-time head coach, explained his excitement for the opportunity.
“I am so excited about everything,” Berblinger said. “I have always wanted to be a head coach, so for years I have been thinking about how I wanted to do things.”
The history of Hutchinson High School football runs deep. The Salthawks have won seven state championships, and Berblinger understands the importance of football in the area and what it means to the community.
“Reno County is so special to me,” Berblinger said. “I lived in Hutch from the time I was in kindergarten to 18. Hutch is a football town and there is so much history here. I am excited about this community and ready to build something.”
The Salthawks will open the season Friday, Sept. 4, at Gowans Stadium against the Andover Trojans.
