COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – The No. 3-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's golf team has five players in the individual Top 10 and leads the Bent Tree Classic by 13 strokes after 36 holes played on Monday.
The Blue Dragons had rounds of 293 and 295 for a 36-hole total of 588. The Dragons led by three strokes after one round and opened the margin up to 13 strokes heading into Tuesday morning's final round at Bent Tree Golf Club.
Northeast Community College is second at 601 (306-295). Dodge City sits in third place at 602 (307-295). The Iowa Western B Team and A Team are tied for fourth at 603.
Freshman Ronnie Gibb's opening-round 72 led the Dragons in the opening round Monday morning. Jack Northgraves carded a 73, freshmen Grant Hatzenbuehler and Joe Austin had 74s in the first round.
Hatzenbuehler shot a 71 to lead the Blue Dragons in the second round. The Dragons also counted scores from Northgraves (75), Austin (75) and Gibb (75).
Hatzenbuehler's second round helped him climb nine spots and is tied for second in the individual standings at 145. He is just one stroke off the individual lead of Omaha University individual player Luke Strako.
Hatzenbuehler's 1-under-par round in the afternoon session was highlighted by an eagle on the Par-4, 340-yard 16th hole, his second eagle of the season.
Northgraves and Gibb are in a four-way tie for fifth place at 147. Austin is tied for ninth at 149.
Hugo Duquaine was the fifth golfer counting toward the team score. He had back-to-back rounds of 77 and is tied for 31st at 154.
Sophomore Corey Scullion and freshman Matt Vearncombe are playing as individuals this week.
Scullion made a 16-place jump from the first to the second round and is alone in fourth place at 146. Scullion opened with a 76, then tied for the second-lowest individual round of the day in Round 2 with a 2-under 70.
Vearncombe is tied for 31 at 154 after rounds of 78 and 76.
The Blue Dragons will be paired with Dodge City and the Iowa Western A Team and will tee off from Hole 1 on Tuesday between 8:30 and 9:10 a.m.
