HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In a closely contested game, tenth-seeded Walters State held off a pesky South Georga State College 93-84 in game 6 of the NJCAA DI Men's National Championship.
The Senators went out to a 7-0 lead to start the game and let the contest for all but 25 seconds. The close scoring game saw 2 lead changes with 3 ties. Walters State largest lead was 10 at the 5:31 mark of the first half.
South Georgia State stayed in the game with 23 points off of Walters State's turnovers (21).
Taquez Butler of Walters State led all scores with 22. Also in double figures for the Senators were Carter Webb with 17, Brian Carter with 15, and Da'Mori Lytch with 13. Walters State shot 60 % from the floor with 33 for 55 shooting, they put up 21 treys but only converted on 9 of those.
For the Hawks they were led in scoring by Jeremy Anderson with 21. Chandler Thomas had 19, Dominck Wright 14, Da'Avion Thomas with 13 and Trey Callaway added 10. Georgia State shot 40.7 % from the field on 24 or 59 shooting and were 7 of 18 from behind the arc.
South Georgia ends their season at 23-11.
Walters State advances to play seven-seed Midland College at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
