HAYSVILLE, Kan. — The Hutchinson Monarchs saw their undefeated streak come to an end Tuesday night, falling 6-5 to the Haysville Aviators in a tightly contested matchup.
The Monarchs (6-1) outhit the Aviators 10-7 but were unable to overcome key moments that tilted the game in Haysville’s favor. The Aviators capitalized on a wild fifth inning and a critical home run to secure the win at home.
Haysville’s starting pitcher Cooper Senne earned the win, while Hutchinson’s starting pitcher, Cole Toureau took the loss.
The Monarchs struck first in the top of the fourth with back-to-back RBI singles from Jace Legg and Bryson Bradford to tie the game at 2-2. However, the Aviators responded with a four-run bottom half, highlighted by a two-run double from Owen Rush and a wild pitch that allowed Cale Ortner to score.
Hutchinson clawed back in the fifth inning with a two-run single by Legg, bringing the Monarchs within one. But in the bottom of the fifth, Quincy Groebl extended the Aviators’ lead to 6-4 with a solo home run to left field.
Bradford later scored on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth to make it a one-run game, and Kade Demmer followed with a double, but the Monarchs couldn't push across the tying run.
Hutchinson finished with 10 hits and no errors, while Haysville managed 7 hits and committed one error.
The Monarchs will look to bounce back tonight as they again match up with the Aviators in Haysville with the first pitch at 7 p.m. tonight. Hutchinson hopes to start a new winning streak, while the Aviators (6-2) gain momentum with a big win over one of the league's hottest teams.
