PRATT, Kan. (AP) — The Pratt City Fire Department is mourning the loss of Assistant Chief George Stevens, a longtime firefighter and community leader who dedicated more than five decades to public service.

In a statement, the department said Stevens died after 53 years of service, calling him “a brother” who served with honor, courage and unwavering dedication to both the department and the Pratt community.

“Today, we lost a brother who served this department and our community with honor, courage, and dedication,” the department said. “He will be missed greatly.”

Stevens’ commitment to service extended well beyond the fire department. He served as a Command Sergeant Major in the Kansas National Guard and was actively involved in numerous veterans and community organizations.

His contributions included work with the B-29 Museum, the All Veterans Memorial, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Patriot Guard and the Pratt Rifle and Pistol Association.

Colleagues say Stevens’ decades of leadership and service left a lasting legacy, not only within the fire department but across the broader Pratt community.
