STRATACA
Strataca is thrilled to announce that we officially reopened to the public this past weekend after a brief, unexpected closure for maintenance. We’re excited to once again welcome visitors underground and continue sharing the rich mining and geology heritage that makes this Kansas destination so special.
We want to be clear: at no point was anyone in immediate danger. But when it comes to the safety of our guests and staff, we never take chances. We always err on the side of caution because your trust matters. From the camera systems monitoring our environment, to the floors you walk on, to the roof over your heads, we examine every detail. If there’s even the slightest concern, we don’t open until everything is thoroughly inspected and cleared. At Strataca, we don’t cut corners. Ever.
While we’re proud of our commitment to safety, we also want to be transparent: this closure came during our busiest time of year, summer, and it had a significant financial impact. Like many nonprofits, we depend on peak seasons to carry us through the year. Being closed during that time was difficult, but necessary.
That’s why the outpouring of support from our community meant so much. Your patience, encouragement, and kind words reminded us just how deeply Strataca matters, not just as a museum, but as a shared experience, a piece of Kansas history, and a place families return to time and again.
As a nonprofit, we rely on more than just ticket sales to keep our doors open. Our long-term future depends on consistent community investment. One of the most powerful ways to help right now is by becoming a member. Memberships provide vital funding that helps us preserve exhibits, maintain a safe and welcoming environment, and continue offering educational programs for students, families, and guests from around the country.
In return, members receive free and discounted admission, exclusive offers, access to hundreds of museums through the ASTC Passport Program—and most importantly, the knowledge that they’re helping protect a one-of-a-kind underground experience for generations to come.
If you believe in what we do, we invite you to become a member today by visiting underkansas.org or by planning your next visit. Every person who walks through our doors plays a role in preserving this Kansas treasure.
