HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Police Department Traffic Unit is reminding drivers to slow down as summer travel increases traffic on Kansas roadways.

The department is joining law enforcement agencies across the country for the Speeding Catches Up With You campaign. The national traffic safety effort runs from July 7-15 and will include increased law enforcement presence on local roads.

Police said speeding is considered an aggressive driving behavior and creates added risk for drivers, passengers, pedestrians and bicyclists.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding does not just put the driver at risk. It also endangers others on the road. Drivers are reminded to obey posted speed limits and adjust their speed for road conditions.

The department said failing to follow speed limits can lead to serious consequences, including a greater potential for loss of vehicle control, reduced effectiveness of occupant protection equipment, increased stopping distance, higher economic costs tied to speed-related crashes and increased fuel consumption.
