HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce has named Hedrick Exotic Animal Farm and Bed & Breakfast as the recipient of its April Small Business Award, recognizing decades of innovation, dedication and unforgettable experiences.
Founded in 1979 by Joe Hedrick, the business began as a modest operation focused on specialty rodeo acts. With just three full-time employees and a handful of animals, Hedrick’s passion for animals quickly evolved into a nationally recognized enterprise that now employs 18 full-time staff members and cares for more than 35 breeds of exotic animals from six continents.
Hedrick Exotic Animal Farm initially gained popularity with its petting zoos, pony rides and camel rides. Over time, the business expanded its offerings to include pig races, ostrich and camel races, and even provided animal actors for stage and film productions across the country. At its peak, the operation maintained five traveling petting zoos, performing from coast to coast, including engagements in Hawaii and Canada.
Today, the farm still maintains a traveling presence with one year-round team, while focusing more on its unique Bed & Breakfast experience. The B&B, which features nine artistically themed rooms painted by local artists, allows guests to enjoy up-close encounters with exotic animals—guests may even wake up to find a kangaroo or giraffe just outside their window.
"Hedrick’s is about unforgettable encounters between people and animals," the Chamber stated in its announcement. “There’s truly nothing like it in Reno County—or anywhere else in Kansas.”
The Chamber’s monthly Small Business Award honors local businesses that demonstrate innovation, community involvement and long-term success.
