The Nickerson community is coming together this weekend to support the family of Ben Wallace, a well-known local baker, father and community member who died in a tragic accident last weekend at the age of 38.
Friends and community members describe Wallace as a caring and gentle person who was always willing to help others. He leaves behind his wife and five children, with the youngest in second grade and the oldest preparing to graduate from high school this weekend.
A fundraising bake sale and bounce house event is planned for Saturday, May 16, in front of Berridge’s in Nickerson. Organizers say the event will begin at 10 a.m. and continue until items are sold out, with proceeds going directly to support the Wallace family.
Wallace was known throughout the area for operating a bakery out of his home. According to friends, he had recently purchased a building in Nickerson and was working toward opening a physical bakery location in town.
Family and friends said Wallace loved spending time outdoors with his family and recently developed a passion for lake activities and boating. He reportedly died following an accident involving a boat trailer at a lake over the weekend.
Community members say Wallace’s kindness, calm demeanor and willingness to help others made a lasting impact on those around him.
Organizers are encouraging residents to attend Saturday’s fundraiser to help support the Wallace family during an incredibly difficult time.
