Stan Simpson, 92, of Hutchinson, passed away Feb. 28, 2021, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born Oct. 2, 1928, in Dodge City, to Clof and Flora (Williams) Simpson.
Stan graduated from Ford High School and attended Colorado A&M, Fort Collins, Colorado, majoring in Agriculture Economics. He married Marilyn Patterson in 1949, in Ford. They divorced in 1978. Stan served in the U.S. Air Force, flying as Loadmaster on Military Air Transport (MATS) during the Korean conflict. He worked for Farmer Marketing and Supply Cooperatives in Nebraska, Colorado, and Kansas as general manager at co-ops in Dodge City, Andale, and Atchison before retiring in 1984 from the Dodge City Cooperative. Stan was headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, serving as cooperative advisor to the International Labor Union, IFPAAW, Geneva, with affiliates in Asia, Africa, and Europe. He was author of “Cooperative Management Manuel”, published by the Cooperative League in three languages for use in developing countries. Stan was elected president of the Kansas Cooperative Council and the Kansas LP Gas Association and received a Kansas governor’s appointment to Director of State Grain Inspection Board. He was one of the three founding members of Servi-Tech Inc., in Dodge City.
Stan married Pat Farris Bridges in 1984, in Monterey, California. They lived on a mini-farm in Kingman County, Kansas before moving to Hutchinson in 1995. He volunteered at the Reno County Volunteer Center as a licensed defensive driving course instructor, Meals on Wheels, and the Hutchinson Animal Shelter. Stan was a member of New Covenant Presbyterian Church and served as a deacon. He served as treasurer and manager of the Scroggins Foundation in Dodge City from its founding in 1983, until it was merged into the Community Foundation of Southwest Kansas in 2015. He served the Community Foundation from 2016 to 2020, as their farm manager.
Stan is survived by: wife, Pat Simpson; children, Glory Spikes, Stana Geier (John), Tammy McElhinney, and Jeff Simpson; brother, Rod Simpson; grandchildren, Tanner Scott (Meggie), Jordan Gwaltney (Kevin), Jared Simpson (Claire), Ashley Lonnberg (Joe), Nick Geier (Britta) , Matthew Geier; 11 great-grandchildren; stepsons, Warren and Wes Bridges; four step-grandchildren, Samantha Taylor (Joe), Emily, Alec, and Noah Bridges.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; son, Mark Stanley Simpson; sister, Ruth Koch; sons-in-law, Mick McElhinney and Trent Spikes; and step-granddaughter, Annie Bridges.
A private family entombment will be at Scroggins Memorial Mausoleum, in Dodge City. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, March 5, 2021, at Elliott Mortuary.
