TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Transportation’s Charge Up Kansas NEVI Plan has been approved and is set to receive $39.5 million total over the next five years under the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program.

The plan provides KDOT federal funds to help build a high-powered EV charging network across the state.

Tami Alexander, KDOT Transportation Electrification Manager told Hutch Post that no specific sites have been selected yet, but the program intends for there to be charging stations along the corridors in the plan every 50 miles and within 1 mile of the corridor. I-135 is designated as a Pending EV corridor in need of additional charging.

"Newton or North Newton could be the site of a charging location," Alexander said, "Those interested in installing or hosting a charging location will need to respond when the official request for projects is released by KDOT."

Alexander added that there is a Direct Current Fast Charging location in McPherson, but that location will likely need some upgrades to meet NEVI guidelines. Hutchinson is not eligible for the current funding.
