HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The announcement by the Governor that schools in Kansas would not open until after the Labor Day holiday caught many by surprise.

“I understand, I’m going to stay out of the political divisiveness that come with these kinds of announcements,” USD 308 Superintendent Mike Folks said. “We just need to focus on maybe making some sacrifices now  that will benefit kids down the road  and so we will continue to work diligently and get information out to parents and staff as soon as we can.”

Superintendents in the state will also meet with State Education Director Dr. Randy Watson on Thursday to discuss the restarting of schools and the Navigating Change initiative.

“We’re fortunate here in 308, we have six teams that are working together and separately. And we have disseminated that and sent it to those teams,” Folks said of the 1,100 page set of guidelines. “We by no means had our 308 plan ready to go but we were working on it  and we will continue to work on it whenever we’re able to  get back in person with students and staff.”

Folks says he is preparing a video that will be sent to parents that will outline the plans for the school district to reopen whenever that may occur.
