HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The annual Coats for Kids campaign has wrapped up another successful year, collecting 1,425 coats and an additional 675 blankets, hats and gloves to help local families in need stay warm this winter.

The long-running effort, which began in 1988, was founded by former owner John Neal and his friend, Dan Deming. Today, it continues as a cherished community tradition under the leadership of current co-owners Rachel and Chris Nelson of Ineeda Cleaners.

“It’s really a community effort,” said Rachel Nelson. “We’ve seen so many familiar faces bringing in coats, cleaning out closets, and just wanting to help. Even one coat makes a difference for one child.”

Donated items were collected through the month of October and were then cleaned free of charge by Ineeda Cleaners before being distributed through the Salvation Army of Hutchinson. This year's distribution will take place Friday, Nov. 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 8, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Salvation Army.

The campaign has become a hallmark of local generosity, helping ensure that children and families in need are prepared for the cold months ahead.

“Seeing this many items come in really shows the heart of our community,” Nelson added. “We’re just grateful to be part of something that makes a real impact.”
