Reno County Commission to Consider Landfill Gas Facility

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County commissioners will consider a proposed facility to process gas from the county landfill when they meet at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, in the Veterans Room of the Reno County Courthouse.

The proposed conditional use permit would allow Meadowlark Renewables LLC to establish methane treatment equipment and an operations warehouse on 2.86 acres leased at the landfill.

The site is on the south side of West Clark Road, approximately 350 feet east of South Mohawk Road, on property zoned for agricultural use.

According to the agenda materials, the facility would collect raw biogas produced by the landfill and remove impurities, including carbon dioxide and nitrogen, to produce clean, dry methane. An underground pipeline would deliver the processed gas to a Kansas Gas Service compressor station 1.44 miles west on South Whiteside Road.

The Reno County Planning Commission recommended approval on a 6-0 vote following a Sept. 17 public hearing. No audience members spoke for or against the application, and no written comments were received. The recommendation includes six conditions of approval.

Jason Seneker, project manager for Sparq Renewables, told planning commissioners the tallest structure would be a flare estimated at approximately 30 feet.

Seneker also said the project is designed to accommodate growth in landfill operations without expanding beyond the proposed lease area. According to the agenda summary, required state and Public Works permits were under review, with no concerns anticipated.

Commissioners also will consider waivers involving the required number of parking spaces, asphalt or concrete paving for the driveway and parking areas, and a requirement for two loading spaces.
