HUTCHINSON, Kan.— He may be running for the 34th Kansas Senate seat but for now he could become a Reno County Commissioner. Mark Steffen was appointed by the Reno County Republican Committee to fill out the unexpired term of the late Bob Bush during a meeting Tuesday evening.

Steffen’s appointment must be approved by the Governor. County Commissioner Ron Sellers said during Tuesday’s commission meeting that he would ask the Governor to fast track approval of the appointment through, to give the County Commission three members again. Steffen won out over the other nominee Daniel Friesen who is the lone candidate for the seat in the General Election. The vote was 12-1. Presuming Friesen wins November 3, he would take the seat in January.

Steffen is also a candidate for the 34th State Senate seat. He defeated incumbent Ed Berger in the primary. He’ll be opposed by Shanna Henry from Cheney November 3rd.
