TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) announced that Shawn Steiner of Dodge City High School will join its staff July 1, 2026, as an assistant executive director.

Steiner was selected following a national search from a strong field of candidates. He will succeed Mark Lentz, who is retiring from the KSHSAA staff.

Steiner joins KSHSAA after 21 years as a high school teacher, coach and administrator. He spent his entire professional career at Dodge City High School, starting as a business teacher for three years before serving as dean of students/assistant principal for eight years, district activities director for nine years and district athletic director for one year. During his tenure at Dodge City, Steiner also served as a coach in football, wrestling and baseball. He was also an integral part of the host team for multiple KSHSAA state championship tournaments, including football, volleyball, basketball and golf.

“Mr. Steiner is respected as an outstanding educator, and his leadership with the KSHSAA will continue to empower students to serve, grow, and lead as they engage in the interscholastic activities,” KSHSAA Executive Director Bill Faflick said in a release. “His faithful service as a teacher, coach, building administrator, state leader, along with his parent perspective, all support Shawn as an excellent choice to serve the member schools of the Association.”

Steiner has been selected as the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Administrator of the Year in 2017 and 2024, as well as being designated by the Kansas Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (KIAAA) Art Newcomer Promising AD of the Year in 2019. Following his service on the KIAAA Board of Directors and service as president-elect and president, Steiner was designated the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association State Award of Merit designee.

A graduate of Claflin High School, Steiner earned an associate of science degree from Garden City Community College in 2001 and a bachelor of science degree in business with a minor in secondary education from Fort Hays State University in 2004. In 2008, Steiner earned a master of science in educational administration and leadership from Kansas State University.

Steiner’s primary responsibilities will be the administration of boys and girls soccer, golf and wrestling while assisting with general administration of the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
