
Steven Robert Welty DVM, 74, passed away November 23, 2020, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born December 10, 1945, in Hutchinson, to Charles Robert “Bob” and Mildred B. (Kiner) Welty.
Steve was a 1963 graduate of Nickerson High School. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1968, and later graduated from the KSU School of Veterinarian Medicine in 1972. Steve owned and operated the South Hutchinson Animal Clinic for 20 years, and was also a third-generation farmer, farming until the end of his life. He was always exploring new hobbies, included collecting model trains, building model ships, restoring vehicles, wood burning, woodwork, wire work, pottery, painting, and coin collecting. Steve was quite the adventurer and outdoorsman. He was a member of the Mid-American Treasure Hunter’s Club, Horseless Carriage Club, Kansas Central Model Railroaders, Great Plains United Methodist Conference Disaster Relief Team, and the South Hutchinson United Methodist Church.
On June 6, 1968, Steve married Phoebe Jane Jones, in Hutchinson. They shared over 52 years of marriage.
He is survived by wife, Phoebe Welty of Hutchinson; children, Lisa (Michael) Riggs of Olathe, and David (Elizabeth) Welty of Abbyville; sister, Connie (Bob) Carman of Thousand Oaks, CA; and grandchildren, Gavin Riggs, Emerson Riggs, Lanae Welty, Isaac Welty, and Evan Welty.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents.
He loved life. Steve loved to laugh, even at himself. Above all, he was committed to his family. His dedication and love for his family is his greatest legacy.
Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, November 28, 2020, at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5905 W. 4th Avenue, Hutchinson, with The Reverend Robbie Fall officiating. Friends may pay their respects from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, November 27, 2020, at Elliott Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the South Hutchinson United Methodist Church, in care of Elliott Mortuary and Crematory, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
