CHENEY, Kan. — The usual large crowd expected for the Independence Day weekend at area lakes. Cheney state park is sold out once again for the holiday with the usual crowd of about 50 thousand expected. But boaters and those who enjoy the lake will need to be on the lookout for blue-green algae.

The lake is now under an algae warning from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment after being under a watch for the past several weeks. That means most contact with the water should be avoided for both people and pets. Boating is OK but skiing and swimming are strongly discouraged. Any fish caught should be cleaned thoroughly with potable water and only the fillet portion fo the fish should be consumed.

Cheney isn't the only area lake suffering from blue-green algae. Both Marion County Lake and Marion Reservoir are under advisories for the toxic growth.
