As families prepare for the new school year, Larkland Barber Shop is offering free haircuts for children during a special back-to-school event on Sunday, Aug. 2.
Owner Philip Satterfield said the event is designed to help families facing higher expenses as they purchase school supplies, clothing and backpacks.
"We know finances can get tight this time of year," Satterfield said. "We want to provide this service because we want to help the community and the people in it."
Three barbers will provide free haircuts for children from 8 to 11 a.m. The event is open to kids only, and there is no charge for the haircuts.
The back-to-school event is an extension of Larkland Barber Shop's ongoing community outreach program. Typically held on the second Sunday of each month, the shop offers free haircuts to anyone struggling financially.
As part of that monthly program, the shop often provides transportation for about 10 residents from the local homeless shelter and welcomes anyone who cannot afford a professional haircut.
"We like to get the word out that anybody who's struggling financially or just barely making ends meet, our services are available 100% free," Satterfield said.
Satterfield said giving back is a way of thanking the community that has supported his business.
"The only way that I'm able to make any money is because of the community coming in and paying for their haircuts," he said. "Not everyone can afford it, and I want to provide this service because I want to help the community."
Larkland Barber Shop is located at 2532 N. Main St. in the Larkland Shopping Center. The shop is open seven days a week, operating from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
In addition to its free haircut events, the shop also offers discounted haircuts for senior citizens. Regular haircuts are priced at $18, while seniors receive a $4 discount, bringing the cost to $14.
Satterfield said the reduced senior pricing is intended to help those living on fixed incomes while ensuring professional haircuts remain affordable.
