WICHITA, Kan. — Frank Mason III hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the Elam Ending to lift JHX Hoops past the AfterShocks 64-59 Monday night in a heated quarterfinal of The Basketball Tournament at Koch Arena.
The Kansas alumni team advanced to face Kentucky alumni squad La Familia at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Lexington, Kentucky.
The game changed with 2:43 remaining in the first half when a rebounding battle between Wichita State’s Rashard Kelly and JHX’s Mario Chalmers sparked a scuffle. Kelly, Chalmers and every player who left the bench were ejected, leaving both teams with six available players.
Mason struggled early but finished with 13 points, including the final six for JHX. Zeke Mayo led the Jayhawks alumni with 25 points, while Jacob Hanna added 15.
Marcus Santos-Silva recorded 15 points and 10 rebounds for the defending champion AfterShocks.
JHX led 56-55 entering the Elam Ending with a target score of 64. After several empty possessions, Mason hit a left-wing 3-pointer to make it 61-57. Santos-Silva answered before Mason buried the game-winner.
