GARDEN CITY, Kan. — Kyrell Shaw delivered another big scoring night and Chudier Dorar turned in the first double-double of his career, but Hutchinson Community College could not get the final stop Wednesday as the Blue Dragons fell to Garden City 97-93 at Conestoga Arena.
Hutchinson (10-9, 5-8 Jayhawk) has dropped three straight, despite Shaw’s 35 points on 13-of-19 shooting. It was Shaw’s fifth 30-point game of the season. Dorar finished with 11 points and 14 rebounds, adding two blocks as Hutchinson controlled the glass 43-28.
The game was tight throughout, featuring eight ties and 19 lead changes. Garden City (12-7, 7-6) took a 43-40 lead into halftime, and the Broncbusters answered nearly every Hutchinson push in the second half.
Hutchinson briefly grabbed the lead early in the second half, using a quick 5-0 burst highlighted by a Bobby Cannon 3 to go in front 45-43. The lead swung back and forth from there, with neither team able to create breathing room.
Garden City’s difference-maker was Zaire Lott off the bench. Lott scored 21 points and went 7 of 8 from 3-point range as Garden City finished 13 of 30 from beyond the arc. Dasean Lewis added 16 points, while Jamir Westry had 13 and Nico Doume scored nine on 4-of-4 shooting.
Hutchinson shot 52.9% overall (36 of 68) but could not match Garden City’s perimeter barrage and left points at the line, going 15 of 24 on free throws. Garden City went 16 of 22 at the stripe.
Daleron Thomas scored 11 points off the bench for Hutchinson. Cannon added 13 points, and Kordell Williams posted seven points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
Down two late, Hutchinson pulled within 95-93 when Williams knocked down a 3-pointer with 56 seconds left. After defensive stops proved elusive, Garden City sealed it at the free-throw line in the final seconds.
Hutchinson returns home Saturday to host No. 25 Butler. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.
