HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Allen Samuels Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram and Eagle Media has named Hutchinson Correctional Facility officer Billy Herald as its First Responder of the Month for August.
Herald, who works at the Central Unit of the Hutchinson Correctional Facility, was recognized for his professionalism and vigilance in keeping staff and residents safe. His nominator praised him as someone who greets employees warmly each day while also serving as the first line of defense against contraband entering the facility.
“Billy is a great first responder as you walk in the door at the central unit,” the nomination read. “Not only is he friendly and makes staff feel very welcome, but he has been the first response to finding drugs coming into the facility, which in turn not only saves staff’s lives, but also the lives of the residents we protect. He is truly the model of being a first responder in all aspects.”
Herald has worked at the facility for nearly two years, primarily checking in staff and screening for contraband. He previously worked in a hospital emergency room before transitioning to corrections as a way to continue helping people closer to home.
“I was surprised when they considered us first responders,” Herald said. “We respond quite a bit to emergencies that people don’t always think about. We try to do the best we can to keep everyone, staff and residents, as safe as possible.”
He said what he enjoys most about the job is the challenge, especially on weekends when visitors come into the facility. Herald added that he values the opportunity to build rapport with the public and show the positive side of corrections officers.
Herald usually works five to six eight-hour shifts each week and often takes on overtime. He said the job can be demanding, but also rewarding for those willing to put in the effort.
“It’s a great place to work with a lot of great people and opportunities for growth,” Herald said. “If someone’s interested, I’d tell them to check out the Kansas Department of Corrections website or come in and talk to HR. There are a lot of avenues to learn more.”
