Sports Headlines for Saturday

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

BALTIMORE (AP) — The game between the Kansas City Royals and Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards has been postponed because of rainy weather. The teams will try to make it up Sunday as part of a straight doubleheader. The weather could still be an issue Saturday night, when the Orioles and Royals will try again to play the first game of this series. This is Kansas City's only scheduled visit to Baltimore in 2022. Jordan Lyles was supposed to start Friday night against Carlos Hernandez of the Royals. That is now the matchup for Saturday.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Kirill Kaprizov had a goal and an assist, Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 29 shots, and the Minnesota Wild beat the St. Louis Blues 5-1 to take a 2-1 lead in their Western Conference playoff series. Joel Erickson Ek had a goal and an assist, and Jordan Greenway, Mats Zuccarello and Jonas Brodin also scored as the Wild improved to 8-8 all-time in Game 3s. Fleury, playing in a 16th consecutive Stanley Cup playoffs, earned his 92nd career playoff win. Ryan O'Reilly scored a power play goal and Ville Husso made 28 saves for the Blues.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Dylan Carlson hit an RBI single in the ninth inning to give the St. Louis Cardinals a 3-2 win over the San Francisco Giants. Designated hitter Juan Yepez doubled with one out off Camilo Doval (0-1) in the ninth. Carlson's timely hit scored pinch runner Brendan Donovan. Ryan Helsley (1-0) pitched 1 2/3 innings and earned the win. Giovanny Gallegos picked up his sixth save.

NEW YORK (AP) — Two-time Gold Glove-winning outfielder Tyler O'Neill went to a salary arbitration hearing with the St. Louis Cardinals, asking a three-man panel to award him $4.15 million rather than the team's $3.4 million offer. A decision from arbitrators Mark Burstein, Brian Keller and John Stout is not expected for several weeks. The three heard the case remotely, O'Neill set career bests last year with a .286 average, 34 homers and 80 RBIs, finishing eighth in NL MVP voting. He is hitting .213 with two homers and 19 RBIs this season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — There are some intriguing rookies who were not selected in last week's draft that could carve out a roster spot with the Kansas City Chiefs during their rookie minicamp this week. One in particular is Clemson wide receiver Justyn Ross, a once-budding star whose career was threatened by a congenital spine disorder that ultimately required surgery. Ross was bypassed by every team in the draft, mostly due to his medical history but also poor testing at Clemson's pro day. But he's a proven big-play commodity and could help out a position of need for the AFC West champions.

NHL-PLAYOFFS-NEWS

Injuries plague NHL playoff teams

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The rest of the Pittsburgh Penguins' playoff run won't include goaltender Casey DeSmith. Coach Mike Sullivan said DeSmith underwent core surgery on Friday morning and will miss the rest of the postseason.

DeSmith entered the playoffs as Pittsburgh's top goaltender with All-Star Tristan Jarry sidelined with a lower-body injury.

Injuries are threatening to tip the balance of a handful of first-round series around the NHL playoffs. The Penguins are down to third-string goaltender Louis Domingue (doh-MIHNG') against the New York Rangers.

The Washington Capitals are missing big scoring winger Tom Wilson against the top-seeded Florida Panthers.

The Nashville Predators are now leaning on Connor Ingram against the Colorado Avalanche with starting goalie Juuse Saros out.

NFL-RAIDERS-PRESIDENT

Dan Ventrelle out as Raiders team president

UNDATED (AP) — Las Vegas Raiders team President Dan Ventrelle has left the organization less than a year after taking the job.

Owner Mark Davis announced in a statement that Ventrelle "is no longer with the Raiders organization" but divulged no details around the decision. However, Ventrelle said in a statement to the Las Vegas Review-Journal that he was fired in retaliation for bringing concerns from multiple employees to the NFL about a "hostile work environment."

Ventrelle took over as team president on an interim basis last July after Marc Badain resigned. Ventrelle was promoted to the full-time role after the season ended.

PGA-WELLS FARGO CHAMPIONSHIP

Jason Day handles rain, expands lead at Wells Fargo

POTOMAC, Md. (AP) — Jason Day expected a grind at the Wells Fargo Championship on a rainy day in Maryland. He got one, but his retooled swing held up for a 3-under 67 that expanded his lead to three shots over Max Homa.

Day is seeking his first win since four years ago in this tournament at Quail Hollow. The Wells Fargo moved to TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm this year because its usual venue is hosting the Presidents Cup in September.

The course has held up well, but the weather couldn't be much worse for early May in the mid-Atlantic. Homa played with Day and shot 66.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS

Players had to deal with a rain delay and soggy conditions on the TPC Sugarloaf.
