Funeral set for boy who died in hit and run Kansas crash

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas man accused of driving a vehicle in a fatal hit and run accident that killed a 4-year-old boy in Wichita made his first court appearance Tuesday. His family has scheduled a funeral for Saturday.

Fiends established a GoFundMe account to assist the family with the burial of Hazadi Ashimwe.

Downey was driving a pickup that struck the boy when he and his mother were crossing a street in downtown Wichita Monday morning.

EMS transported Hazadi to a local hospital where he died, according to officer Charley Davidson  The truck fled the scene but was found about 100 yards away. The boy's mother was not injured.

Marcus Downey, 36, of Wichita, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and misdemeanor driving while license is suspended or cancelled, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

A funeral service is scheduled for Saturday at CGK Missionary Church in Wichita, according to the GoFundMe page.
