Wichita, KS- The Wind Surge kicked off their final homestand at Riverfront Stadium with a 5-1 loss to the Northwest Arkansas Naturals as the Surge finished two for eleven with runners in scoring position to drop the series opener Tuesday.
Cody Laweryson got the nod on the hill for the Surge and pitched four scoreless innings and tallied five strikeouts with only two hits and one walk allowed before being relieved by Michael Boyle in the fifth inning.
Anthony Veneziano got the start on the mound for Northwest Arkansas and pitched six innings, allowing zero runs, six hits, and one walk to earn the no-decision. Jonah Dipoto came in relief in the seventh inning.
The Naturals broke the tie in the top of the eighth inning behind a two-run homer from Tyler Gentry to give Northwest Arkansas a late 2-0 advantage. Gentry finished two for five with five RBIs in the game.
The Surge got on the board in the eighth inning with a bases-loaded single from Yunior Severino to cut the deficit in half 2-1. Severino finished the game one for four with an RBI.
The Naturals busted the game open in the ninth inning as they scored three insurance runs from a base-clearing RBI double from Gentry to take a 5-1 lead.
