WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State junior right-handed pitcher Nick Potter was selected in the 5th Round of the 2025 MLB Draft by the Houston Astros on Monday afternoon. Potter was the 156th overall selection.
The Shockers have now had a player picked in 45 consecutive MLB drafts with the exception of 2020, which was shortened to just five rounds due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Potter appeared in 23 games out of the Wichita State bullpen in 2025, going 2-1 with three saves and a 3.34 ERA in 29.2 innings. The native of Greenwood, Missouri struck out 33 and walked 17, allowing 21 hits for an opponent batting average of .200. A junior college transfer from Crowder College, Potter developed into one of the nation's hardest throwers while at Wichita State, with a fastball that was regularly clocked in the upper-90s and touched 100 miles per hour.
The righty turned in several dominant outings at the back-end of the WSU bullpen. On March 5 at Globe Life Park against Abilene Christian, Potter struck out five of seven hitters over two hitless scoreless innings, and shined even brighter in the Lone Star State against Rice on May 9. He allowed just one baserunner on a walk over 4.0 scoreless innings, striking out a season-high six batters along the way. Potter was at his best in high-leverage situations, holding opposing batters to a .171 batting average with runners in scoring position. The junior also allowed just a single home run and six total extra-base hits.
